‘Will Those Responsible Be Held Accountable?’ Isabelle Bonnici’s Call To Action After Paceville Collapse

Isabelle Bonnici has issued a public call to action after a building in Paceville collapsed, asking how long citizens will have to wait until Malta takes safe construction seriously.

“Another tragedy that breaks my heart even more,” Isabelle wrote, “a heart that’s already broken.”

Last night, a building – Tania Flats – collapsed in Paceville just hours after 32 people were evacuated as a result of architects who noticed serious structural defects. No injuries were reported

Bonnici urged the Maltese authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions which could have been tragic.

“So what happens now? Will those responsible be held accountable for the serious damage they caused, or since no one died, will everything be forgotten by next week? Where is the seriousness and discipline?”

Bonnici has been urging for stricter and safer enforcement of construction laws since the untimely death of her son Jean-Paul Sofia.

“Did we really have to wait until everything collapsed? Couldn’t we make sure things were done properly step by step so no one would have to suffer?” Bonnici emotionally wrote.

She went on to ask who the contractor and architect responsible for this collapse are, explaining that the public has a right to know so that they can avoid hiring them.

Bonnici then questioned the intentions of the country’s politicians, asking “Does anyone actually care about us, the ordinary people? Or is it just money, contractors lining politicians’ pockets, lack of discipline and filth ruling this country that’s suffocating us?”

“Are we going to let my son and the other victims of this sector have died in vain?”

Both the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority released statements about the collapse.

The BCA stated that an immediate stop work order was issued on the site on Tuesday. Following further inspections and discussions with the architects involved, it was determined that there was a significant risk to the stability of the affected building. The Police were promptly informed, and the building and the surrounding perimeter were evacuated to ensure public safety.

Further inspections and safety evaluations are being led by the BCA, with the support of independent experts who are assisting in assessing the adjacent building, investigating the cause, and site clearance and safety coordination.

Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, the authority assured.

Meanwhile, the OHSA wrote that yesterday morning, the authority conducted an inspection of the adjacent site and cooperated with the police to evacuate people due to danger.

Excel Trading Limited, the company responsible for the adjacent developments, assured that its works were not at fault. It cited serious structural problems within Tania Flats as the main issue. Architect Christopher Mintoff who wrote a report on Monday on the property agreed, saying Tania Flats was a “danger to its users”.

Excel Trading Limited is owned by Joseph Portelli, Mark Agius and Daniel Refalo.  Agius is listed as the project developer.

“This might be the last warning the building may give prior to a more serious scenario. These types of structures fail slowly, then suddenly,” Mintoff had said in his report.

Speaking to Times of Malta, Mintoff said he did not see anything unusual in the nearby construction works and that the project’s architect handled the situation very well.

Demolition works in the adjacent project had stopped by 7th May.
