With Three Microchips Installed In Palm Of His Hand, This Maltese Man Is Already Living In The Future
It was 2008, and Steven Cilia was looking at his 1970s car, thinking to himself: how am I going to open this door without using a key?
Next thing he knew, he was on a journey that would lead him to be among the first in Malta to merge modern communication technology with his body – with three different microchips being installed into his body for various uses within years.
In an interview with TVM, Cilia, who works with informatics and stays abreast of the latest in modern technology globally, explained how people often grab at his wrists when he’s makes contactless payments in stores, with some trying to find a hidden smartwatch or card under his sleeves.
But it’s all about the tiny chips right in the palm of his hand, literally.
By now, he can do a variety of things through a swipe of his wrists, from opening doors to making payments.
Cilia enjoys the ease these chips bring with them, making daily transactions and actions even easier. And he isn’t afraid of being hacked or anything, saying that one needs to stay updated if they plan to get chipped.
Chipping, or microchipping, is becoming more and more common around the world, with one US company specialising in vending machines implanting its staff with chips with the help of a local tattoo artist back in 2019. But it wasn’t all positive, with some employees quitting in protest, and watchdogs raising concerns over potential surveillance issues.
As futuristic as all this seems, it is very much happening in Malta. Gadgets recently showed how easy it was to self-implant microchips – check it out below.
