Iranian activist Narges Mohammedi has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for women’s rights in Iran.

Mohammedi was awarded by the Norwegian committee for her fierce dedication to fighting oppression in Iran, human rights and freedom.

“Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal cost. All together regime arrested her 13 times, convicted her 5 times and sentenced her to 31 years of prison and 154 lashes,” a spokesperson for the Nobel Peace Prize said.

“Mohammadi is still in prison as I speak.”

The Norwegian panel selected her from a pool of 350 nominations.

Authorities arrested Mohammadi in November after she attended a memorial for a victim of 2019 protests.

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini was killed in custody by Iranian morality police for not following strict rules to cover one’s hair, triggering the biggest protests since the autocratic regime came into power in 1979. Under the slogan “women, life, freedom”, more than 100,000 Iranians took part in peaceful protests against the brutality of women.

A year after her brutal death, protests have largely dwindled but sporadic ones still occur, defying strict rules to cover women’s hair, despite the potentially murderous rule of authorities.
