The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has declared an industrial dispute with HSBC Malta plc, citing ongoing delays in discussions over a financial package intended to compensate employees for their past service.

In a statement issued by the Professionals, Finance and Services Section of the GWU, the union said the dispute was being declared in line with Clause 9 of the Collective Agreement between HSBC Bank Malta plc and the GWU for the period 2024–2026.

According to the union, the decision follows “excessive delays” in setting up a meeting with the bank to discuss the proposed compensation package. The GWU also raised concerns over the prolonged wait for a draft document outlining the proposed terms of payment.

Section Secretary Riccarda Darmanin criticised the union’s exclusion from the process, describing it as “unacceptable” and calling for immediate engagement. She added that the uncertainty and speculation among employees had become “intolerable” and warned that the union would take all necessary measures to oppose any agreement finalised without its involvement or consent.

While formally declaring the industrial dispute, the GWU said it remains committed to constructive dialogue and urged the bank to participate in timely, transparent, and meaningful discussions to resolve the matter in the best interest of all parties.

A copy of the declaration has also been sent to the Director General of the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) to formally register the dispute and monitor its progress.

This marks the second industrial dispute involving HSBC Malta in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the Malta Union of Bank Employees (MUBE) also launched industrial action – including a sit-in strike – accusing the bank of failing to engage in serious negotiations over staff compensation linked to its impending sale to CrediaBank.
