‘Wrong Question’: Transport Minister Takes On The Economist In LinkedIn Comment Section

Malta’s very own Transport Minister has taken on one of the biggest and most prolific international magazines in the world, challenging a poll posted on Linkedin by The Economist.

Minister Aaron Farrugia challenged a question posed by the UK magazine: “Who is best placed to fix the world’s big problems?”

The options were tech companies, governments and scientists, with the latter in the lead at 43%. Apparently, Farrugia thought the question was “wrong” from the get-go – and keen-eyed Maltese readers took notes, shared screenshots and kept the receipts.

Farrugia, clearly had his feathers ruffled by the question and wanted to set the record straight.

The minister responded (with his official title as a civil servant) with: “Wrong question. Who sponsors the scientists’ demo and research? Mostly governments”.

One Maltese commentator questioned the minister’s questioning, pointing out that the actual sponsor would be the general public through taxes, but… the minister insisted that the government should take credit, as “those are taxed [paid] for services rendered by the government”.

We’re just waiting for an Economist poll that really ties into Farrugia’s portfolio, like one on how to tackle traffic crises, perhaps.

Do you think Farrugia’s question was fair? Sound off in the comment section below
