Yana Borg Debono Grech Defies PL And Votes Against Independent For Birkirkara Mayor
PL Birkirkara councillor Yana Borg Debono Grech has gone against her party’s instructions to support independent Kaylocke Buhagiar’s mayorship bid.
In a vote today, five out of PL’s six Birkirkara councillors joined forces with Buhagiar and voted in favour of him as mayor.
However, Borg Debono Grech – the PL’s most popular councillor – and the PN’s six councillors voted against this nomination.
Another vote for Desirei Grech – the PN’s most popular councillor – to be elected mayor was also defeated, with all six PL councillors and Buhagiar voting against it.
At last month’s election, the PN emerged as the most popular party in Birkirkara, winning 47.51% of the vote, way ahead of PL’s 41.66%.
However, PN and PL both won six seats each, with Buhagiar, a former PL councillor who turned independent, winning the final seat.
Buhagiar won 999 first-count votes and was elected to the council on the first count but was the fourth most popular candidate overall in terms of first-count votes, behind Yana Borg Debono Grech (1,805 votes), Desirei Grech (1,802 votes) and Maurizio Gauci (1,661 votes).
