Yorgen Fenech Also Banned From Travelling To The United States, PN MP Claims

Yorgen Fenech, the man accused of masterminding the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, has been banned from travelling to the United States, along with Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi, Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi has claimed.

“I can reveal that a certain Yorgen Fenech and his family today were also listed in the travel ban by the US government, together with Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi,” Azzopardi wrote in a Facebook post.

“His name wasn’t published because he is a private individual. The implications are now what they are…”

Yesterday, the US State Department announced that it had designated Mizzi and Schembri as well as their immediate family members over corruption they engaged in while holding public office.

In its statement, the State Department made specific reference to the Electrogas project which Fenech played a central role in.

“Specifically, there is credible information that Mizzi and Schembri were involved in a corrupt scheme that entailed the award of a government contract for the construction of a power plant and related services in exchange for kickbacks and bribes,” read the statement.

It would therefore make it reasonable to believe that similar sanctions have been imposed on Fenech.

Schembri and Mizzi were designated under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 202, which deals with ‘Anti-Kleptocracy and Human Rights’ and have been banned from travelling to the US. The listing is also likely to have financial implications.

It now appears that Fenech has also been included in the US’ move, which, if proved to be the case, raises questions about the effect it could possibly have on business ventures Fenech is linked to, including the Electrogas project.

Fenech had resigned his directorship in November 2019 at the time of his arrest but he retains a share in the company through his own personal company New Energy Supply Limited.

In a subsequent post, Azzopardi said that following yesterday’s “catastrophic developments” Electrogas would have to be “dismantled or taken over by the state”.
