Yorgen Fenech Released From Prison After Five Years In Custody

Yorgen Fenech, the man charged with complicity in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has been released from prison after five years in custody.

Fenech walked out of prison today after he was granted bail on 24th January.

His bail is subject to several conditions. He had to pay an €80,000 deposit and a €120,000 personal guarantee, while this aunt Moira Fenech will serve as his guarantor and her 15.45% shares of Tumas company will act as collateral.

He must not go within 50 metres of the coast or airport, he must sign a bail book at the St Julian’s police station every day, he must stay indoors between 5pm and 11am, a probation officer will be assigned to supervise him and he must only live at the address provided to the court. A police officer will also be stationed outside his residence for 24 hours a day.

His passport and identification documents will be held by the court.

Fenech must not communicate or approach prosecuting witnesses in the case against him, specifically Melvin Theuma and former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri.

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s relatives will be the subject of a court-issued protection order.
