Yorgen Fenech has testified that Keith Schembri had kept him constantly informed about progress in the investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination.

In court today, Fenech, who has been charged with the murder, said that the Prime Minister’s former chief of staff informed him that his phone was being tapped and gave him all the details about the pardon that was eventually granted to suspected middleman Melvin Theuma.

He also said that Schembri had let him know in advance before brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio and Vince Muscat were arrested in December 2017.

Fenech was speaking during a constitutional case he filed to remove chief homicide inspector Keith Arnaud from the investigation.

He said in court that Arnaud used to keep Schembri updated on the case and that when he [Fenech] was arrested, the inspector told him to be responsible when implicating people. Fenech asked Arnaud whether he was referring to Schembri and the inspector replied that he was indeed.

Fenech said that Schembri and Arnaud enjoyed a close relationship. Indeed, according to Fenech, Schembri had once told him that Arnaud had approached him for help in finding a job for his wife and that Schembri intervened to land her a job as a clerical officer at Infrastructure Malta.

Asked about his own personal relationship with Schembri, the murder suspect said it was “almost fraternal”, that they’ve known each since youth and that they used to meet up twice a week, including cooking at each other’s homes. They also turned to each other for help when they had health problems.

Fenech is being represented by Marion Camilleri, an associate with Franco Debono & Associates, and by Gianluca Caruana Curran, an associate with Guido de Marco & Associates.
