‘You Must Suffer After Your Death’: Marzia Calleja Maatouk’s Funeral Postponed Due To Magisterial Inquiry
Marzia Calleja Maatouk’s brother announced that his sister’s funeral, which was originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been suddenly postponed due to a magisterial inquiry.
“In this life, you must continue to suffer even after your death,” Marvin wrote. “Unlike what we previously announced, Marzia’s funeral will not take place tomorrow. A magisterial inquiry has been launched, forcing us to cancel it.”
He said a new date and time for his sister’s funeral will be announced in the coming days.
The body of 24-year-old Marzia, who was on the run along with her husband Jomic Calleja Maatouk, was found in Libya last May but it was only repatriated to Malta this week.
After the latest development, Marzia’s cousin Abigail published a hard-hitting post to criticise the way the authorities handled the repatriation process.
“We have been fighting every day for the past six months to bring Marzia back from Libya but we didn’t find help from anyone,” she said.
“All the police did was keep us in the depot for several hours to interrogate us to find my cousin’s husband, but once they found him they completely forgot about us. They told us that everything was in the hands of the Libyan embassy, but the embassy said it was in the hands of the police.”
“My cousin had to go there himself for Marzia to return to Malta, but six months later, the wound has reopened. All the funeral preparations were ready for tomorrow but it had to be cancelled because they want to open a magisterial inquiry, although six months ago they showed no urgency or interest in making this happen. Institutional failure.”
