After 18 years of fighting the call from the Lord, Christine Farrugia gave in and finally decided to become a nun – but she did all she could to fight it at first.

“It was like I felt something telling me I want you to be mine. I want you as a nun. I remember that when I felt it I started saying me? You want me Lord? You know that I don’t want to be a nun. I want to marry, I want to have a family,” Farrugia said in an interview with TVM.

At the age of 20-years-old, Christine Farrugia felt the first urge to become a nun.

Having been a part of the church since she was young – she’s been helping the church since she was 13-years-old and going to mass twice a week – she began meeting friends and going out at the age of 15, even attending events and hitting up Paceville.

But it was after she ended up in a relationship when she was 20 she began feeling the Lord calling her – she just didn’t feel comfortable in the her relationship.

“I started working at night, working in bars and after-parties. I started seeing what I could do to not listen to the call, even by skipping mass,” she said.

It was after her friend invited her to a retreat that her life began to change. With the help of a bishop she prayed to be shown the way in her life, and soon enough she joined the St Clare’s Monastery.

She now begins a nine-year journey to become a nun.

The Madre, Suor Rose Ellis, who has been working in the convent for 50 years, explained what happens when a young woman shows up at their door.

“I give them courage, I tell them not to be scared, because it’s natural to be afraid of the call. You start thinking, am I going to live in a cloistered Convent, locked away for my whole life? But then I assure her that if you have been called you won’t feel locked away but you’ll feel like you are in a place of peace,” she said.

With 19 nuns under her wings, she’s invited Christine to start visiting them as she begins her training. With nuns ranging from the ages of 38 to 86, Christine will be happily welcomed in to give her life to the service of God.
