‘You Were One Of The Best Ones’: Metsola Pays Tribute To Mentor Francis Zammit Dimech

As Malta prepares to give a final farewell to Francis Zammit Dimech, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola paid tribute to her late mentor.
“Francis Zammit Dimech was one of the good ones. One of the best ones. He loved life. He loved politics. He loved Malta. He dedicated his life to public service and he did so with a smile that never faded. For him, being in politics was a calling, about doing his duty,” Metsola said.
Metsola recounted how Zammit Dimech had taken her under his wing when she was an MEP candidate, offering her constant advice and guidance and allowing her to work out of his district campaign garage.
“He helped me, knowing full well what the inevitable outcome of that election would be. Francis was a mentor, a shoulder to cry on, with a smile and laugh I always relied on,” she said.
“His drive to deliver for people never waned. As Minister in different portfolios he helped drag our country forward. As an MEP, later in his career, we served together – his energy, his humour and his passion quickly becoming contagious to all his colleagues.”
“Everything Francis did, he did with joy and with love.”
She said that Richard England’s LOVE monument in St Julian’s, that Zammit Dimech had spearheaded during his tenure as Infrastructure Minister, will always make her think of the late politician.
“Rest in Peace dear Francis. You’ve done your duty. Malta and Gozo are grateful for your service.”
Zammit Dimech will be laid to rest today following a mass at 2pm at the Balluta Church.
