Young Activist Samantha Pace Gasan Appointed Commissioner For Gender-Based Violence And Domestic Violence

Samantha Pace Gasan has been appointed as Commissioner for Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence.
Still in her twenties, the young activist is taking on the role after being the Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for two and a half years – working to combat discrimination against those with disabilities.
“While I look forward to this new journey, I remain committed to the rights of persons with disability by also emphasising the reality and impact of Domestic Violence amongst persons with disability and other social groups,” Pace Gasan wrote online.
With her experience and expertise, Samantha Pace Gasan will lead the Commission for Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence in taking significant steps to continue addressing this social issue.
In recent years, several important reforms have been implemented in this field, including the recognition of femicide in the criminal code and the recent introduction of legislation allowing for the checking of suspects for previous incidents of domestic violence upon reasonable suspicion.
Pace Gasan also joined forces with the National Youth Council, the Social Solidarity Student Association, and the Network of Young Women Leaders.
The Government acknowledges the substantial work yet to be done and emphasizes the importance of Samantha Pace Gasan’s leadership in strengthening the Commission, enhancing the training of professionals who provide assistance to victims, and continuing the implementation of the Istanbul Convention to protect women from all forms of violence.
