Young Musician Dies After Falling From Vittoriosa Bastions
Cheyne Halliday, a 23 year old Irish musician who fell from the Vittoriosa bastions and was put in a medically-induced coma, has died.
The incident happened on April 30th when Halliday fell from the bastions in Triq il-Ġublew tal-Fidda from a height of about four storeys. The young musician was the singer of Metro Mafia, a four piece band based in Edinburgh.
Halliday’s family and friends started a fundraising campaign to fly him back to the UK for treatment, but around the same time the online page managed to raise 90% of its £15,000 target, the news broke that his life support machine had been switched off.
The campaign went on to raise more than £33,000, which the family said will be donated to a cause that “Cheyne would want.” As it stands, they’re looking for schools or colleges back in Cheyne’s hometown where the money could be used to provide children with instruments and equipment to learn and play music.
Halliday had written and produced the soundtrack to last year’s Edinburgh Gay Pride event, and many people reached out to share their memories of the young musician. “Cheyne has touched many people’s hearts with his charismatic charm, warm soul and undeniable wit,” his bandmate Harry Noble said. “As he believed in Tempus Neminem Manet – time waits for no one – we can only improve and aspire to be great and make him proud.”
His organs were donated and his heart was sent back to the UK to save another life, which his loved ones explained as being “the ultimate gift from a man who did nothing but give.”
