Youth Who Drove Into Police Motorbike In Ħamrun Is Reportedly Cousin Of Teenager Who Ran Over PC Simon Schembri
The 24-year-old drove into a police motorbike after he was stopped for a traffic contravention
A 24-year-old man who was arrested yesterday after driving into a police motorcycle in Ħamrun is the cousin of Liam Debono, the teenager who ran over police officer Simon Schembri last year, One News has reported.
The police said in a statement yesterday that they had stopped a Mitsubishi Shogun due to a traffic contravention. The driver tried to flee again but was stopped again in Saint Joseph High Road.
“While he started threatening the Traffic Officers, he drove into the police motorcycle,” the statement said. “The Traffic Officers managed to switch off the vehicle and arrested the 24 year old on site. Luckily, no one was injured in this incident.”
One News then reported that the young man is the cousin of Liam Debono, the underage driver who ran over PC Simon Schembri in Luqa in 2018, in what was one of the most high-profile hit and runs in recent years. Schembri had to have his arm amputated and later set up the Blue Light Foundation to provide support to first responders.
Debono has meanwhile been charged with attempted murder and is pleading not guilty.
One’s sources said that the youth arrested yesterday is “well known by the police” and that he had sold Debono the car that he eventually used in that fateful hit-and-run.
