Zammit Dimech Vs Puli: The Race For PN’s Secretary General Heats Up

Clyde Puli could be facing a huge challenge to his tenure as the PN’s Secretary-General after party stalwart Francis Zammit Dimech revealed he was pondering taking up the post.

After a MaltaToday report carried claims of Zammit Dimech, Puli rushed to put his name forward in the contest, expected to be held next month.

Speaking to The Malta Independent, Puli laid out a quick electoral pledge:

“The post requires someone working closely and supporting the party leaders, something which I have done for the last two years and which I look forward to continue doing for the length of the project we entered into together. The party requires the necessary stability to move forward.”

Puli, a face synonymous with Adrian Delia’s leadership, has been roundly criticised for the PN’s performance over the past few years, especially in light of the dismal performance in the European and Local Council elections. (Admittedly, the PN’s performance prior to this was far less than stellar).

Meanwhile, Zammit Dimech is undoubtedly linked to PN’s old guard, having served as an MP between 1987 and 2017, also serving as a minister at points.

It’s been reported that a number of MPs have approached Zammit Dimech, often seen as a unifying force in the party that is somewhat independent of the factionalism that pervades the PN, to take the role.

Throwing a spanner into the works is Louis Galea’s proposed reform to party administration. Prohibiting MPs from sitting in the roles, as Galea has proposed, will disallow Puli from keeping the post of Secretary-General.
