Zammit Lewis Calls For Stronger Enforcement With No Special Treatment

PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis has urged the government to focus on improving enforcement and to ensure that no one benefits from lax treatment.

“I hope we have now realised that our country is facing a problem of security and discipline,” Zammit Lewis said.

“Our country and its population has grown, particularly over the past ten years, but economic growth isn’t enough. We need security, discipline and enforcement.”

“While work conditions in this sector have improved, I have no doubt, as an MP but more so as a parent, that I must give a voice to what these people are saying and feeling.”

Zammit Lewis proposed six measures to help improve enforcement.

  1. A historically large national security budget for 2026
  2. A larger police force – both in terms of numbers and more regular training
  3. More police in the streets, particularly in entertainment and touristic zones
  4. More serious enforcement, with no one given special treatment
  5. More effective coordination between enforcement agencies to ensure they work together and don’t act as several ‘mini republics’
  6. An end to the practice of several uncoordinated enforcement actions on small business and self-employed people over the span of a few days
  7. A streamlining exercise on enforcement agencies ahead of a concrete national plan to improve security.
