10 Predictions For The Next 10 Post-Azure-Window Years

Article Featured Image

Make no mistake – today’s Azure Window collapse is going to change things. People are currently busy flooding social media with their tributes or making hilarious memes, but we decided we’d take some time to predict what the next 10 years without our very own iconic natural wonder are going to be like.

Here are 10 things which may or may not happen in the next decade.

1. The Wied il-Mielaħ Window will inevitably become the new Azure Window

OK, obvious predictions out of the way first. This one’s a no-brainer; people have already been sharing Gozo’s other (smaller) beautiful window for a while now, and this is the perfect opportunity for Wied il-Mielaħ’s arch to prove it’s got what it takes to become Gozo’s Next Top Window.

2. The Dwejra Deniers Society will be an actual thing that exists

You don’t have to mourn something that was never there in the first place. Partly a coping mechanism for some, partly an inevitable side effect of fake news, the Azure Window will be treated like it never even existed, because that’s the only way we can ever get over this.

3. Someone will actually propose rebuilding it

Screw Paceville Masterplans and 10-Year Valletta Proposals; brace yourselves for Anġlu Xuereb’s Renaissance Dwejra project, including a new and highly improved marble Azure Window, rising 25 storeys higher than the original one.

4. The Azure Window ‘Wreck’ will become the most popular diving destination in Malta… and the world

Dwejra is already one of the most popular diving sites in Malta and in extension the world, but with such an iconic rock formation plummeting to the sea, underwater tours are about to get way busier. Fingers crossed for the whole thing being done in a sustainable way.

5. Fungus Rock will be Dwejra’s new top selfie background

Look at it, just basking in the sun, waiting for its time. Well, it’s finally here, and Fungus Rock is ready to be the next hot selfie subject.

6. A decade down the line, this will be the equivalent of Malta’s political storm in the early 1980s

Why does everything in Malta have to somehow be about politics? We’re willing to bet that many people have already managed to make the Azure Window collapsing about the Labour Government, or the previous Nationalist Government. And if that’s the case, then get ready to finally stop hearing rants about Mars bars in the 80s.

7. Azure Window t-shirts will be the new livelihood of Gozitan businesses

Fashion is a fickle thing, but we already know one item that’s going to feature heavily on the Maltese runways from now right up to at least 2027.

8. Azure Window tattoos will become the most common way of showing your patriotism

Forget eight-pointed cross tattoos; Azure Window tattoos with emotional script are the next hot piece of Maltese ink. Hopefully, there won’t be too many misspelt tattoos out there; God knows it would be pretty embarrassing to run around with ‘Azure Widow’ on your chest.

9. Hundreds of young children called Azure and Dwejra will be roaming the streets of Malta

We can expect a lot of weird baby names in 2017, but let’s face it; they’re going to have a hard time competing against gems like Azure, Dwejra, and Window.

10. Janice Mangion and Mary Spiteri will team up on a song about the Azure Window and win the Eurovision

And guess what? I’ll be called Twejqa and it’ll be beautiful.
