6 Other Islands Malta May As Well Buy While We’re At It

Article Featured Image

While the rest of Malta is caught up discussing whether we should or should not look into buying Pantelleria as a potential sister island, we thought we’d set our sights on an even more ambitious project. Why settle for just one island when we can have these six others?

1. Sable Island, Canada

Known for two main things, horses and shipwrecks, Sable Island combines Malta’s love for a good ponni with the drama of a shipwreck we keep talking about for ages (see: St. Paul). Also, we’d have seals added to the list of national fauna, and honestly we’re more than ok with that.

2. Ókunoshima Island, Japan

An island fit for a fenkata. While everyone is gushing over ‘Cat Island’, ‘Bunny Island’ is, for the most part, ignored. Why not add the tiny Japanese island to our archipelago and at least have free range rabbits in our national dish?

3. King Island, Tasmania

What sort of international investment would all this island-buying be without a little love for our Maltese-Australian community living on the other side of the world?

Conveniently located close to Melbourne (aka Malta away from Malta) King Island also has the perfect name for Maltese people as anyone we like is already referred to as ‘king’ (or kuġin, but Kuġin Island doesn’t have the same ring to it).

4. Socotra, Yemen

Are you tired of everything the Maltese are proud to call their own being referred to as a combination of lots of different cultural influences? Why not buy and island that has an incredibly unique set of flora and fauna, and inject a heavy dose of uniqueness into the would-be Maltese ecosystem.

5. Hashima Island, Japan

At one point, the military-prison-meets-island was considered as the most densely-populated space in the world, which lends itself very comfortably to the Maltese archipelago. Sure we’re trying to gain space, but at least we don’t run the risk of ruining this one.

6. Iceland

Perhaps instead of buying this one we’ll offer a part exchange and just swap populations. They come live here and we move up north. We may all die of hypothermia, but let’s see how the smug Icelandish people with their successful football team and their clean environment fare on an island that’s 1/100th of the size.
