After a historic and captivating election for the members of the European Parliament yesterday, the Maltese public has chosen these six candidates as their representatives for the next four years. Here’s a look at Malta’s six representatives and how many first-count votes they won.

Roberta Metsola – 87,473 votes

The current President of the European Parliament dominated the competition on all counts with a whopping 87,473 votes.

This makes Metsola not only the most voted candidate this year but also the most-voted candidate in the history of the Maltese MEP elections, trumping previous record holder Simon Busuttil’s record of 68,782 votes which had stood since 2009.

Alex Agius Saliba – 63,899 votes

The first Labour candidate to be elected yesterday did a solid job of securing 63,899 votes. This is not Agius Saliba’s first time contesting, however, as his last campaign in 2019 managed to gain around 18,808 votes. It is a massive improvement for sure, as in four years he managed to gain around 45,091 more voters.

This is the highest number of votes ever won by a PL MEP candidate, breaking the record Miriam Dalli set in 2019.

Daniel Attard – 11,703 votes

The rising star in the Labour Party had an incredibly successful campaign on his very first attempt at the MEP elections, managing to secure a solid number of 11,703 votes.

The former Mtarfa mayor had incredible party support as he endorsed the likes of the party’s iconic leaders such as the ex-Prime Ministers Dom Mintoff, Alfred Sant, and Joseph Muscat. He wishes to follow in their footsteps and write his name down in Labour’s history.

Thomas Bajada – 10,792 votes

The youngest candidate in this year’s election, Bajada, a native Gozitan, managed to secure the fourth-largest vote tally this year, collecting 10,792 first-preference votes. Although Bajada was a part of Pulse during his time at the University of Malta, this was his first ever true foray into politics.

Peter Agius – 9,418 votes

Peter Agius, a representative for the Nationalist Party and the second candidate to be elected from the party, came out triumphantly after a tough battle for his seat in the European Parliament with a tally of first-preference votes at around 9,418 votes.

With an incredibly strong background and qualifications in the EU, which include being the speechwriter for former European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, and training in law as a current active lawyer, he has pledge to make the EU more accessible to the everyday citizen.

David Casa – 3,683 votes

The European Parliament veteran has once again claimed a seat in the MEP elections, making this his fifth term as an MEP. This makes him the longest-running MEP in Maltese history, starting his journey in 2004, the year Malta joined the EU. He is also one of the longest-serving MEPs in the entire European Parliament.
