An Appeal To Joseph Muscat: Use Malta’s Presidency To Stop The Horrors In Syria

As news broke of an alleged gas attack in Syria earlier this week, Facebook and Twitter exploded with the horrific footage of innocent children killed by the attack. The images are beyond disturbing, and with the usual wave of outrage on social media, there was also a strong sense of helplessness.

As the international political situation gets more complex by the hour, an online petition has been started to call for Europe to be the strong force against the atrocities.

And right now, Malta is leading the EU Presidency.

Our appeal is simple, forget fluffing the country’s prowess as an economic powerhouse and do away with the vapid speeches to bland applause and get serious about the issues that matter. Take the opportunity to make Malta’s presidency mean something.

Many of us always say we wish there was more we could do, but now our small island nation has the power to sway the agenda being discussed by politicians in the EU. We need to make our voices heard and ask Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to change the game when it comes to the conflict in Syria.

If the public’s outcry is anything to go by, the whole nation will support a tougher approach to ending this madness.

The Avaaz petition, which has already amassed over 310,000 signatures, is calling for Europe to be the voice of reason in these discussions, and remain the bastion of hope for the Syrian people.

“The EU is deciding right now what to do on Syria, and there are rumours some countries could push for a ‘deal with the devil’. But if enough of us demand Europe’s leaders lock up the monsters who commit these crimes, it could be the only threat that stops more murder.”

But besides putting the pressure on our MEPs, the President and the Prime Minister, there are things you can do. There’s loads of organisations you can donate to like Doctors Without Borders. Other NGOs working on the ground include the Karam Foundation and SAMS

If you can’t afford to donate to these organisations, then you can always do your best to make your voice heard. You can message or phone your representatives and tell them you want to see the horrors end today.

Share this post, let’s use our Presidency to its full potential
