Particulate Matters: New Investigative Series About Malta’s Iconic Dockyard And Nearby Residents’ ‘Perpetual Health Concerns’

Malta’s deteriorating air quality has been a source of concern for many in the last couple of years… A new investigative series promises to shed more light on how residents in Malta’s historic Three Cities – Senglea, Victoria, and Cospicua – have had to contend with a polluter in their backyard: Malta’s historic dockyard.
The series, entitled Particulate Matters, has investigated “how increased shipyard vessel traffic and lax air pollution monitoring is causing perpetual health concerns” in the Three Cities region..
Dozens of testimonies and new open-source data paint “a grim reality where the citizens’ right to breathe clean air remains at risk – and accountability elusive.” The Particulate Matters team, based in Switzerland and in Malta, aims to shed light on the situation in Malta as well as across Europe as a whole.
Funded by journalismfund.eu through its environmental reporting grant with further funding being obtained from the Citizens’ Lab Fund as administered through SOS Malta, the investigation carries reporting by Julian Delia, Joanna Demarco, Christian Zeier, and Anina Ritscher.
Stay tuned for the first two parts of this investigation, which will be published tomorrow morning on Lovin Malta.
