The latest Broadcasting Authority survey is in, and Lovin Malta’s strong impact online has yet again been confirmed, with the portal ranking as the nation’s second favourite platform for news and local programmes.

Setting aside massive international companies like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, Lovin Malta claimed 9.3% of the share when it came to the country’s preferred online news source, and another 14.3% when it came to platforms used for watching Maltese programmes online.

In both cases, this made Lovin Malta the second top local portal for news… second only to the Times of Malta. As far as other social media-first platforms go, Lovin Malta confirmed its position as a market leader, with a substantial margin over all other online media platforms.

This marks a substantial growth for the portal on both fronts, and is further proof of the growing trend for people to consume news online.

Nearly one in every five Maltese residents (19.6%) were found to watch local programmes that are solely produced for online portals: an increase from the last BA survey conducted mere months ago, which had that number at 18%.

As is perhaps to be expected, the younger age cohorts (12-40 years) seem to be more inclined to watch these online Maltese programmes (an average of just under 25%) than their older counterparts (an average of 16%).

Interestingly, meanwhile, the country’s two political party stations, One and Net, registered much lower numbers when it came to viewership for online programmes (Net has 1.9% while One got 0.7%). Both channels, however, still registered significant viewerships on TV… going so far as to both claim they were the country’s number one station.

This means Lovin Malta is now the online news platform of choice ahead of most traditional news organisations, as it continues to embrace new formats of bringing its content to its ever-increasing reader base across all social media platforms.

Commissioning regular surveys to asses the viewership of TV, radio and online content, the Broadcasting Authority’s latest findings came after a July survey which conducted seven days’ worth of interviews with a total of 2,100 individuals.
