‘Cheap Media Stunts’? Malta Has An MEP On A Reality TV Show Mocking The EP President For Posting About Another One

Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba has criticised European Parliament President Roberta Metsola for focusing on “cheap media stunts” days before a Labour-funded reality show, in which he stars, will air.

“We finally heard about something that Madame President Roberta Metsola wants to do for our country. She’s going to start a campaign so that the ‘Punisher’ returns to Love Island,” he wrote on social media, referring to a post she made earlier today.

“Wouldn’t it be better if she focused on other things? Stop wasting time on cheap media stunts and sit for a debate with me to discuss the future of the Maltese representation in the European Parliament.”

This comes days before Kamp Politiku – a reality TV show of the Labour MEPs – is set to launch.

Il-Kamp Politiku is a reality TV show on the line of Big Brother/Grande Fratello, featuring the nine Labour MEP candidates spending a weekend in a suite hotel room together.

It intends to show a human side to the candidates and will see them engage in a number of challenges and tasks, with some surprises on the way.

When asked by Lovin Malta about whether she’d be watching the TV show, Metsola said no; she’s “invested in making sure that as many Maltese and Gozitans meet MEP candidates” including herself.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m not sure how I feel about Metsola’s Love Island post this morning. But the intention behind it isn’t that different to that of il-Kamp Politiku: the same way the show is set to appeal to younger generations and their interests, so is her post which probably only took a couple of minutes as opposed to the weeks that planning, staging and executing a reality TV show must have taken.

You are both playing the same game: if you really are against “cheap” tactics, whether it’s partisan rhetoric or appealing to the age of social media then please, do something different.

Until then, neither political party has the credibility to pounce on the other, even if it is their main political strategy.

Besides, it’s not like Prime Minister Robert Abela’s wife Lydia Abela and their daughter Giorgia Mae enjoyed a private lunch with all the Love Islanders from Season 1… oh wait.

With regard to the invitation to debate, one has to keep in mind that at present, Metsola isn’t just an MEP candidate, she is the representative of the whole of the European Parliament, including Agius Saliba, this context is crucial. That being said, I do think it’s imperative that she engages in a debate, or at least gives a reason for not being able to.
