Guest Post: Reclaiming Manoel Island Is Possible If We Dare To Dream It Together

For years, the idea of a vibrant public park in the heart of Malta’s most densely populated urban area has been a dream of many. As it is mine.

As a young artist and fine arts student, I dream of a place where one can escape from the relentless noise and hustle culture that surrounds us. A space where peace isn’t a luxury, and one is able to find solace with their own thoughts.

As a history enthusiast and activist who primarily works on environmental issues, there is nothing more beautiful to me than being able to lay your back against a tree with a book in hand, or to paint quietly against Valletta’s magnificent skyline.

This dream is not mine alone. After talking to many, I see that Manoel Island can be so much more for the public.

If you had to look through their eyes you could see a place where you can hear children’s laughter, where parents get to capture their kids’ awe as they discover the beauty of nature.

They wish for a place where dogs can run freely, living their short-spent lives happy. And where kicking a ball with a couple of friends or going out for a swim with your family is enjoyed in a more breathable environment.

A place where couples can enjoy a moment of silence and where running and cycling is not just safer but also motivating.

I want you to imagine Manoel Island as a safe haven that gives back rather than takes. A space in which animals, native plants and history are protected.

A park not paved over with concrete, but rather full of rich soil instead of rich apartment owners, where community is built and not gated.

This isn’t about money, it’s about will.

So I ask you again, do you dare to dream?

If you do dare, I invite you to sign the petition calling for this dream to come true.
