Just A Reminder That PL And PN Councillors Were All In Favour Of Mosta Tree Chopping

With the way mainstream politicians are speaking about the Mosta tree felling case, one would be forgiven for forgetting that their party’s councillors are the reason this is all happening in the first place.
Yet every single PL and PN councillor on the Mosta local council were in favour of removing the 12 ficus trees from the Mosta piazza and transplanting them elsewhere.
No one breathed a word until a group of activists started drawing the public’s attention to it.
As soon as it became clear that the activists had garnered significant public support, the two large parties started changing their tune. Bernard Grech instructed PN’s Mosta councillors to present a motion calling for a re-discussion of the issue and Robert Abela urged the council to reconsider its decision.

Don’t be surprised if there’s a U-turn and both parties pat themselves on the back for “listening to the people”.
While this would be the latest example of political spinelessness, decision-making based on social media criticism rather than an actual assessment of the facts, the good news is that public pressure is effective.
Yet if the decision does get changed, it’s important that credit is given fully to those who took time out of their day to protest and raise the alarm, rather than those who were simply scared of the backlash.
Will you attend the Mosta tree protest this evening?
