Malta Reacts To The Migrant Who Took His Own Life

A migrant from Ghana was found strangled in a construction site with an electric cable earlier this morning. According to a report on The Times, Frederick Ofosu took his own life due to the stress caused by his imminent deportation back to Ghana as a result of the government’s recent decision to review humanitarian protection laws.
Ofosu left a heartbreaking recorded message for his friends explaining how he was being forced to feel like a criminal when he was sure he had done nothing wrong.
As soon as the news was released, many people took to Facebook to express their grief and give their condolences.

The posts vent frustration at a sense of helplessness in situations like this, with many believing there was more that could have been done to prevent this.

“Innocent civilians are treated worse than animals to the point of no return. Appalling”

“Welcome to sunny Malta – unless you have darker skin, or follow a different religion, and happen to wind up here in your desperate search for a better life.”
At the end of the day however, it’s also vital to remember the bottom line is this; it happened, and it definitely shouldn’t have.
Let’s try to move forward and do something about it, because we can’t stand any more similarly heartbreaking stories.
In a statement made on Facebook, Malta’s newest political party, Partit Demokratiku, has called for more concrete action to be taken.
“Partit Demokratiku calls on the government to come up with concrete integration and inclusion plans for people who have been granted THPN status and who have become part of our society.”
