Birgu Resident Hits Back Against Online Classist Bullshit

A resident of the Cottonera Area, more specifically Vittoriosa, has taken to Facebook to vent his frustration at the classist generalisation of all the people who live in the area.

Reacting to patronising comments posted on an online news story, Luca Lorenzo’s post took down all the negative stereotypes still associated with that region.

The post read:

Hello, my name is Luca am I am from Vittoriosa. At this point I would like to point out that.

  • I am not a drug dealer or taker
  • I am 24 years of age & have a job
  • I am not illiterate (pero dyslexia kinda hinders me in that area)
  • I have also always had respect for teachers from my first day in year 1 till the last day of my Degree.
  • I have a girlfriend from Bormla who is also a University graduate.

You tell them, Luca!

Of course, this isn’t to say the region has no issues to speak of, but it’s unacceptable to just write off an entire town as being one large problem.

“I just wanted to point these things out since it is still new to some people that in 2018 the Cottonera area is not 50 years behind,” continued Luca, “comments such as these are truly hurtful, especially coming from people that most probably come in their droves to enjoy the facilities such as wine bars, restaurant and heritage sites our City has to offer.”

The comments in question

The post was received well online, with scores of commenters rushing to thank him for vocalising how they were feeling, or praise him for shutting down comments such as these. And if his point wasn’t clear enough before, Luca’s last line is a nice, tight summary.

“PS. No, we don’t plot night and day to steal the yatchs, FYI”
