‘Enough Is Enough!’: Third-Country Nationals Open Up About ‘Exploitation’ While Working In Malta

Article Featured Image

The post explains how a third country national finds themselves in Malta, being hired by a company in Malta before even leaving one’s home country. They explain that moving to a new country brings about a long of fears that we often don’t consider. But with the job, one is offered security and stability.

“We’re not asking for special treatment, just fairness and respect!” the emotional post read. “We came here in good faith, to contribute, to work hard, and to build a life. But instead, we’re treated like disposable objects, tossed aside when it’s convenient for the company, and then blamed for their own shortcomings.”

The mirage breaks once they arrive in Malta. The post states how one is treated when they start working with subpar conditions. When the tough decisions about downsizing are made, the employers turn on the employees. “They start blaming YOU,” the person explained, detailing a termination which is carried out through a “Performance Improvements Plan”.

With hundreds of reactions and dozens of comments, the discussion continued in the comments.

“Look what happened to the Bolt Couriers when they spoke up,” one particular comment sheds light on the grim reality. The comments, along with the post, spread the message of wanting to raise awareness and fight for fair working and living conditions. Some of the comments contain retelling of personal experiences from third country nationals. Some also say that this problem is not secluded just for foreign workers, but is also a problem for Maltese workers.

“This exploitation needs to stop,” the post finished. “We deserve better. We deserve transparency, respect, and the basic human decency of being treated fairly. We are not pawns in your corporate games, and we will not be silent any longer!”

Do you think this is a form of structural discrimination or is it a problem faced by all workers?
