Fresh Layer Of Tarmac On ‘Road To Nowhere’ At Miġra l-Ferħa Sparks Online Controversy
A photo shared on Din l-Art Ħelwa’s Facebook group yesterday evening shows a fresh layer of tarmac on a road in Miġra l-Ferħa leading to the cliffs. The ‘road to nowhere’, as some users are calling it, is situated in a Natura 2000 site, and has already created a great deal of controversy over the last couple of hours.
“Every single day that passes, I just become more and more disgusted,” one angry user said. Others took a more satirical approach, suggesting fresh asphalt over The Hypogeum or a couple of penthouses on Ħaġar Qim.
Other users were not so fast to criticise the project.
“After more than 50 years of unkept promises, something is finally being done for local motorsport,” one user said. The road in question has been used as a track for hill climb racing since the late 1960s, with local motorsport enthusiasts welcoming the decision to finally give it ‘a decent blacktop’.
“I wondered how long it would be before the complaints started,” a retied racer said. “Although I don’t agree with the tarmac in the area, it’s a lesser evil compared to a racetrack,” one person said. “But we’re still getting both… and that is the problem”.
