A PN journalist and former MEP candidate has reacted to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s sister not allowing the leader of the Opposition from laying a wreath at a makeshift monument to the murdered journalist in Valletta.

“I’m hurt by what happened this morning… a lot,” Dione Borg said. “It was hurtful seeing the PN’s wreath on the floor when this was the party that fought for the freedom of expression and democracy in this country.”

“Maturity is needed… but as we overcame large challenges in the past, this new challenge must be overcome for unity,” Borg continued. “Our duty is to continue working because we believe that the PN is the best political tool for change in this country.”

Borg’s statement comes after an emotional standoff between leading members of the nationalist party and Helene Asciak, the sister of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, this morning.

Members of the PN, including leader Adrian Delia, had attempted to place a wreath under a makeshift monument dedicated to the journalist.

As Delia approached the memorial, Asciak told them to stay away and be respectful.

“Go away from me please,” she told him. “Let me have five minutes here setting up the memorial. Please step back. Can you please step back? Can you please have some respect? You are doing it for your cameras.”

After they left the wreath there, Asciak picked it up and threw it away.
