‘Timeless’: Roberta Metsola Reshares Cheeky Edward Scicluna Mug Quoting Lovin Malta Interview

European President Parliament Roberta Metsola has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding former Finance Minister and Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna, resharing a cheeky mug with his face that goes all the way back to a 2018 Lovin Malta interview with him.

On her Facebook page, Metsola reshared a photo that she had taken back in 2018 with the mug depicting Scicluna and his well-known phrase “U Ejja Come On” inscribed on it. “Timeless,” Metsola wrote, adding the hashtag #UEjjaComeOn for good measure.

This phrase has become notorious in Malta due to the context in which it was originally uttered – a doorstepping by Lovin Malta back in March 2018 following the arrest of Pilatus Bank’s chairman Ali Sadr Hasheminejad by the United States.

U ejja, come on,” Scicluna had told Lovin Malta, refusing to give a straight answer when asked whether the license of Pilatus Bank will be revoked. “You’re going to ask these questions so early in the morning? In any case, it’s the regulator (the Malta Financial Services Authority) which deals with such cases.”

By November 2018, Pilatus Bank’s operations were officially terminated after the European Central Bank revoked its license following the money laundering allegations.

Scicluna’s recent actions have sparked renewed criticism, with a court ruling just last week that enough evidence had been presented for him stand trial alongside 14 other people facing charges and a potential bill of indictment in connection with the Vitals hospitals concession.

While suspending himself from his duties as Central Bank Governor just last night, Scicluna has chosen to keep his substantial salary, a decision many see as controversial.
