Earlier this week Prime Minister Joseph Muscat addressed a question on gender equality in his live Facebook Q&A.

After recognising the arguments against quotas and having a system based more on meritocracy, he insisted that national progress on gender equality was taking too long to become a reality. He said that quotas must be introduced, even at national parliament level.

But Nationalist MEP Roberta Metsola and Labour MEP Miriam Dalli have spoken out about the dangers of gender quotas, and how they could foster a situation were women are tokenised. Partit Demokratiku leader and independent MP Marlene Farrugia has also come out against a quota system, insisting in a Facebook post that women should not be treated “like tuna”.

Do you think quotas the way forward? Will they be a suitable catalyst for gender equality? Let us know if you agree with Muscat’s conclusion by taking this poll.
