This Is What A Real Anti-Establishment Move Looks Like

After days of hearing the Prime Minister try to gaslight the nation into believing that the most powerful people in the country aren’t part of the establishment but are actually fighting it, last night’s student protest was the perfect tonic.

One by one, the law students marched up the court steps to challenge Robert Abela’s rhetoric head-on.

“It’s not true that a magistrate is obliged to conclude an inquiry in 60 days. The law states that when a magistrate doesn’t conclude the inquiry in 60 days, they must inform the AG in writing about the reason behind the delay.”

“How wrong the Prime Minister is in implying that just because he gave the judiciary more resources in 2020, he expects them to reciprocate the trust he showed them.”

“When the Prime Minister speaks, he doesn’t speak as a lawyer expressing his personal opinions but he speaks on behalf of the government. The Prime Minister’s press conference cannot be interpreted as his personal opinion but as the government’s official position, which is that the courts are against the people.”

They were erudite, confident, passionate, funny, and with just the right dose of irreverence.

They were also very much anti-establishment.

In fact, they showed Abela up as someone who isn’t a victim or an underdog but rather the most powerful man in the country who is ready to do whatever it takes to keep the establishment in full control.

No matter what the spin claims, these students weren’t motivated by hatred towards the Labour Party or love for the PN. Some were even scared of political retribution, if not against them then against their parents. It’s not easy to go against the powers that be, which is why so few people do it.

However, these particular students realised that if the act of challenging the government is completely outsourced to the opposition, the media and the usual activists, then the likelihood is that not much will change.

Sometimes these messages are best delivered by people who have no skin in the game other than their desire for their country to have a better future.

The students’ protest sent a powerful message to the establishment – you may have the power to do what you like, but don’t expect to do it without meeting any resistance.

And I suspect that will concern them a great deal.

Did you attend the protest last night?
