Watch: My Parliament Message About The Future Of Malta’s Media Industry And Hate Speech Laws
Last week I was invited by PN MP Karol Aquilina to address Parliament for a national forum about the current state of the local media.
In my five minutes of speaking time, I wanted to keep it realistic, but not fatalistic, and focus on the following points.
-Journalists and people in the media industry should be treated as real human workers facing real human challenges, rather than lionised as heroes of democracy or condemned as nasty people who want to ruin other people’s lives.
-Discussion on the media industry should be expanded to not only include those who work in traditional media outlets, but also people who create content for newer platforms or individually.
-The local media landscape has evolved in leaps and bounds in recent years, heralding a new age of media pluralism in Malta. More voices are being heard, more stories are being told, more approaches are being tried out, and people are more camera-confident than ever.
-With so much content around, this new age is posing fresh challenges for people who want their message to have a national impact – not just journalists, but marketers, businesses, activists, politicians etc – especially since the trend in media is to focus on your own content rather than reporting on what other platforms are saying. Everyone has had to get more creative and will have to get even more creative in the coming years.
-A brief note on AI chatbots, what they could mean for the media industry, and whether journalists might ignore press releases that they suspect were written purely by AI.
-Whether the quest for “news neutrality” has essentially died, whether it is possible to achieve pure neutrality, and whether people are even seeking out this style of reportage anymore.
-A call on the government to update our hate speech laws, which were introduced to safeguard the most vulnerable people in society but which are commonly being used by people in power against regular citizens who insult them on social media.
