Why Philosophy Should Be Celebrated Every Day
In our era of technological innovation, the power of philosophy often gets overlooked.
However, World Philosophy Day, which was held earlier this week, was a timely reminder that philosophy is not just an academic subject or a relic of ancient thought, but an extremely important subject that deserves to be celebrated daily.
Philosophy offers us to explore the most profound and food-for-thought questions that I am sure everyone has had in the back of their mind at 3am staring at the ceiling or just sitting on the ground and observing the stars above you.
Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? What is reality? What is my purpose in life? What is the nature of reality?
Far from being a theoretical indulgence, philosophy invites us to life deliberately, questioning our values, choices and existence.
Currently the modern era we are living in is filled with distractions.
Our digital devices give us countless of information in the spam of seconds but philosophy encourages us to take a step back, question and think critically about what truly matters.
Philosophy isn’t just confined in lectures or abstract debate among friends. It has practical relevance. Consider the works of thinkers like Søren Kierkegaard, who discussed the anxiety of modern existence, or Hannah Arendt, who explores the dangers of totalitarianism.
The value of philosophy lies in its timeless dialogue. The ideas of Socrates, Descartes, Nietzsche, and Camus still resonate because they address universal human concerns.
Take Albert Camus’s reflection, “Man is the only creature that refuses to be what he is.”
It forces us to confront how often we resist accepting ourselves, our limitations, and even our potential.

Similarly, Friedrich Nietzsche’s observation, “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music,” is praising the courage of those of defy conformity, a principle relevant to today.
Philosophy challenges us to find clarity amidst this uncertainty and meaning in the chaos. Every day, try and take a moment to pause, reflect and truly think critically, read a book or two on what these philosophers wrote as they’re considered classic for a reason.
