Seaside Asian Fusion Resto Umi Ups The Game For St Paul’s Bay Dining

Article Featured Image

New-kid-on-the-block UMI has been punching above its weight in the Asian fusion restaurant game and is lending to the cosmopolitan diversity that the St Paul’s Bay/Buġibba area has been discovering as of late (Matt Bonanno please take note).

UMI 海 means ‘sea’ or ‘ocean’ and specialises in Japanese seafood but the restaurant’s land-based menu is also a treat.

I visited UMI on a cold gusty winter afternoon and ordered a steaming bowl of ramen, comfort food at its best, with charred chicken and a beautiful stock reviving my numb body.

My friend’s Tempura Ramen Soup was also delectable while the third diner enjoyed the best plum sauce a duck could wish for made of fresh plums.

We also sampled the pork bao buns and beef tacos with lime and coriander dressing for good measure and it all went down very easily washed down with a crisp Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.

Though almost bursting at the seams, we decided to share two desserts between us three.

The Japanese cheesecake was a lighter creamier version of the normal cheesecake, delicious but, I felt, lacking a Japanese twist, such as green tea, to coalesce with the imagination and presentation of the food menu.

The apple crumble, again, though excellent, seemed to avoid the oriental theme.

All in all a very pleasant lunch experience and can’t wait to return to try the amazing looking sushi platters and some other goodies I spotted on the menu.

Have you tried UMI yet?
