7 Reasons Why You Must Watch Frida: My Two Accidents
Who doesn’t love a little bit of love, art and DRA-MA, all served with some fiery Mexican Flair! Choreographed by Diane Portelli, Feminist icon and artist Frida Kahlo is brought to life in Moveo Dance Company’s contemporary dance production of Frida: My Two Accidents.
Interested? You should be! Here’s 7 reasons why you should head on down to Pjazza Teatru Rjal this June 9th or 10th!
1. Frida is an enigma of a character.
She famously stated that she survived two accidents in her lifetime, a tram collision and her relationship with her on-again-off-again husband and fellow artist, Diego Rivera. According to Frida, Diego was by far the worst. However, interestingly enough, though he broke her heart on numerous occasions, she always went back to him. This is the catalyst of Frida: My Two Accidents.
2. Inspired by the beauty and horror of Kahlo’s painting ‘The Column’, the contemporary dance production explores Frida’s duality as she shows enormous strength and resilience despite having a broken heart and body.
3. The company of dancers is impressive to say the least, bringing Frida’s story to life with sleek technique and dynamic movement of the highest standard that will leave you wanting more and more and then some!
Oh and did we mention? Moveo Dance Company are the recipients of multiple awards, snatching the coveted Artist of the Year Award at the 2019 edition Premju Ghall-Arti by the Malta Arts Council.
4. Frida: My Two Accidents transcends the stage and becomes a breathtaking experience.
The sublime talent on display fused with a hair-raising storyline and the compelling Kahlo coupled with the spellbinding experience of watching a show in the roofless Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta under the stars, makes for an unforgettable night out in the Capital.
5. Choreographer Diane Portelli shares a lot of similarities to Kahlo.
She resonates deeply with her outspoken and rebellious nature and gives her work a raw form of movement and honesty thus making the piece that much more relatable. Trust us, this piece is going to hit you in ways you did not even expect.
6. Never watched a dance show before? This is the one for you!
This is a contemporary dance performance that puts a beloved story that you’ve read about or seen in the movies in the forefront of the experience. The show explores different facets of Frida’s life; from her vibrant work to her tumultuous marriage, her multiple miscarriages and her Mexican Heritage.
7. On the other hand, if you didn’t manage to nab a ticket to last year’s performance, now’s your chance to watch!
The performance received rave reviews, with the Times of Malta stating: “Every ounce of this show was thought out in detail and with great artistic strategy, be it the choreography, costumes (designed by renowned local designer Ritienne Zammit), lights, backdrop, down to the beautiful music which was originally composed by Albert Garzia in tandem with Portelli’s choreography.”
No wonder it’s back by popular demand!
