How Refugees And Asylum Seekers Can Get The Help They Need In Malta

aditus foundation and the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Malta have been working together to support the asylum seekers and refugees that reach Malta. Their goal is to give these asylum seekers a dignified and independent life in Malta.

Through the years both of these foundations have been working in this sector, they have the sufficient knowledge to understand what exactly it is that asylum seekers need help with.

It was found out that the biggest struggle is for them to secure basic needs, access to specific rights and employment opportunities. This is particularly true in the case of vulnerable refugees or those at risk of social exclusion such as refugee women, refugees with disabilities, and those struggling with their mental health.

Through a 4.5 year EU-funded project, the lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and specialised support workers working with these NGOs have been offering legal advice and psychosocial support for the past three years.

“Our works aims to achieve a situation where asylum-seekers and beneficiaries of international protection are integrated in Maltese society, effectively enjoy their rights, and achieve true independence and self-sufficiency. The AMIF funds were crucial in allowing us to offer these services to all our clients.” – Carla Camilleri, Project Leader.

aditus foundation and JRS Malta are offering refugees a coordinated service approach that encapsulates information and guidance on how to access rights and mainstream services when in Malta. They also aid refugees when it comes to any legal, psychosocial, and employment issues.

These two organisations, with 7 of their employees working together on this EU-funded project, have managed to help over 3,700 clients. Over 1,600 needed psychosocial support and 1,314 required legal advice and interventions.

Over 150 cases came from the bracket of homeless persons, children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses or disabilities, and victims of domestic violence or sexual and gender-based violence.

“Throughout these three years we have seen faced a number of challenges in proving our services: a reluctance to disembark rescued migrants in 2018, an increase of new arrivals combined with a general lack of capacity of the authorities in 2019, and the pandemic in 2020 and its continuing effects up until 2022. However, we consider this invaluable work that dramatically improves the quality of life of our clients and their families. It keeps our teams busy, and somewhat stressed, but also super motivated to securing justice for our clients, a job or bettering their mental health.” – Carla Camilleri, Project Leader.

These activities were carried out within the ambit of Project Refugee Assistance Malta, a project part-financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (2014-2020) and the NGO Co-Financing Fund.

These foundations can continue to carry out these services with your support. Donations are being accepted both by aditus foundation and JRS Malta by following their respective links.
