The winner will also meet an actual gemologist at an actual diamond workshop

The prize includes a full-service experience, including a chat with the jeweller’s gemologist and director, Lee, who will advise on how the diamond can be set.

They will then join the goldsmith and diamond setter in the workshop to see the piece come together.

I don’t speak diamond, break this down for me

When we say the diamond is loose, we mean that it’s not part of a complete ring.

All loose-ring diamonds have to be analysed and graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), which is one of the most respected and accurate labs in the diamond industry.

1. It’s all in the colour

The colour evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is based on the absence of colour. This particular diamond that you can win has a colour F.

The scale begins with the letter D, representing colourless. A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond is like a drop of pure water, and consequently has a higher value. So a diamond of colour F is actually a rather precious diamond to own.

2. Clarity and quality are intertwined

Before a diamond gets cut, it’s exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can create certain inclusions and blemishes on the diamond, which the GIA assess.

But this diamond has been assessed as internally flawless, so we’re not too worried about lack of quality here.

3. The cut isn’t about the shape

A diamond’s cut has less to do with its shape and more to do with the way it responds to light.

This diamond has been certified as a EX/EX/EX (triple excellent) diamond, which mean that its cut, polish and symmetry are almost flawless.

4. Carats? You’ll find them here

A metric “carat” is defined as 200 milligrams. Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs, and this one has a measurement of weight 0.25. Diamond prices tend to increase with carat weight, because larger diamonds are more rare and more desirable.

But mostly, the price depends on the rest of the four C’s also; colour, clarity, cut and carat.

Their finished ring will also be entitled to one-time free servicing, which includes cleaning, polishing and rhodium plating (that’s fancy jeweller speak for the application of a coating which provides a surface that will resist scratches!), valid for a year. There is also the option to upgrade the diamond, if you’re feeling extra fancy!

To top it all off, the winner will receive a bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne with their name engraved on it.

So all you’ve got to do is fill in the form, attend the event and win; the winner will be announced at the GABA Valentine’s event, so save the date on February 13th to go and find out if you’ll be this diamond’s lucky owner.
