Boċċi The Musical Opens To Rave Reviews

Teatru Malta and Give or Take Productions have joined forces to bring you a musical that pays tribute to one of Malta’s most beloved pastimes.

Written by Malcolm Galea with music and lyrics by Matthew James and co-directed by Galea and Philip Leone-Ganado, Boċċi, il-Musical, opened to a packed house on Friday 13th June, at the Guy Boċċi Club in Żurrieq as part of the Malta International Arts Festival.

The response? Glowing. Audience members took to social media to call it “one of the best productions I’ve ever seen on the island,” “Excellent,” and “Well done, I never thought that a musical about Boċċi could have such an original plot, music and beautiful singing.”

Set against the backdrop of a struggling boċċi club on the brink of closure, an eccentric group of characters comes together in a last-ditch effort to save it. Osmar il-Kanadiż, the club’s last remaining player and Jes, its weary owner, never imagined they’d see a woman join their team. But Martha, a young mother, refuses to accept the club’s demise and does everything in her power to keep it alive, though her reasons aren’t so clear to Jes and Osmar.

This team of lovable misfits and their unlikely heroine, refuse to let the club and what it represents, fade into obscurity. As they join forces to take on a fierce rival team, a battle unfolds; for victory, yes, but also for the survival of a way of life that is slowly slipping away.

Delivering heart, humour and a highly original take on an iconic Maltese pastime Boċċi, il-Musical is being performed in 5 more Boċċi clubs over the coming weeks.
