How Many Of These Amazing Maltese Nanna Cleaning Hacks Do You Know?

Few are as proficient in the ancient art of the deep clean, as Maltese nannas! Yepp, those gejxa-clad black belts of all things sparkly and shiny, have over the centuries developed some incredible cleaning hacks, that you may or may not have heard of.
Albeit – most of them, (maybe), remain as effective as ever, and you might want to give them a roll during your next cleaning bonanza!
How many of these Maltese nanna hacks do you know?

Rubbing Salt on oil stains
Yep – that pastizz tal-irkotta was delicious, so delicious your top wanted some of it too! Fear not! Some fine table salt is supposed to do the trick. The salt is said to soak up the oil from the stain, which makes it easier to clean.

Bleach up that mug
As the kettle whistles, declaring its time for that fifth serving of tea, you realise the inside of the mug you’ve been using for the past 10 years isn’t as white and pretty as it used to be. Tea and coffee tend to stain china, but we have a hack for that. Mix one part bleach with 10 parts water and fill your favourite mug with the mixture and leave it to soak overnight. In the morning, rinse the mug well, and voila! Your mug is as good as new!

Descaling a kettle
And since your kettle is working harder than a politician at election time, you will soon start noticing some Malta-grade limescale building on the inside. But you don’t need to throw it away – there’s a hack for that too. Make sure the kettle is unplugged and fill it with one-part white vinegar and one-part water and leave it overnight to soak. By morning, you will be ready for your builders’ brew again!

Newspaper on windows
This one’s a bit odd, but many nannas vouch for its effectiveness. Cleaning and polishing glass windows can be a bit of a pain, especially when the sun hits them at that specific angle, and you get to see the map of South East Asia reproduced all over them in fingerprints. And you can’t use any old piece of cloth, because they will likely leave all sorts of fluff behind. So pieces of wet newspaper are said to do the trick at polishing stage. Try it out, and tell us what you think!

Vinegar for shiny floors
And if you fell in love with those amazing gloss finish tiles when doing up your apartment, it only took you a few weeks to realise what an absolute nightmare they are to keep nice and shiny! Good old friend white vinegar comes to the rescue again! Add some of the condiments to your floor cleaning concoction and it will help keep gloss tiles looking their best. And if you’re worried your house will end up smelling like a Soho Fish and Chip shop, don’t worry, the smell vanishes before you can say ‘can you pass me the salt please’!

Cleaning red wine with white wine
And a real gem for last! We’ve all been there – enjoying a glass of beautiful red wine with friends, or Netflix and horror strikes! You spill red wine on your brand-new white blouse you just bought from that pretty place in Sliema! What to do?! Quick! Reach for the white wine and douse the stain generously with it. It sounds crazy, but it really works – tried and tested! The stain will vanish as quickly as can be.
