Craft Beer Heaven: The Chapels Gastrobrewpub Opens Its Taps

From crisp pale ales to exotic seasonal brews. The new gastrobrewpub isn’t messing around when it comes to all things beer. The brewing tanks at the onsite microbrewery lead straight to the bar, so you’ll be drinking the freshest possible version of the beer available.

You can even pull your own pint at the self-serving taps.

After years spent manning the tanks at Malta’s largest brewing operation, master brewer Konrad Degabriele is the mind behind the beers at this flavour-driven brewing mecca. The 500-litre copper-clad kettles at the on-site microbrewery are turning out several hops-forward beers exclusively for The Chapels which opened in April.

From an East Coast style IPA that Degabriele says is “hoppy but not too bitter”, a fruity “sessionable” pale ale for those longer drinking sessions, and a chocolate stout with notes of coffee – this is a passion project. The on-site microbrewery is also putting out crowd-pleasers in the form of two unpasteurized lagers and an unfiltered malty German Helles beer.

Other seasonal brews are also lined up throughout the year blending local ingredients with exotic brewing styles. They’ll drop every few weeks, exclusively at The Chapels located on Level 3 of the 1950 Farsons brewery building which has been restored into Trident Park and The Brewhouse, a contemporary green office campus.

The Chapels gets its name from the two cooling rooms which once housed large open pool shallow copper dishes holding 2,400 gallons of hot ‘wort’ (freshly boiled unfermented beer) each. These huge rooms were nicknamed ‘The Chapels’ because of their gothic-style bell-vaulted ceilings that were used to cool off the hot, boiled beer as part of the brewing process.

These two ‘chapels’ are indoor beer halls where you can catch the game, chill with friends over a pint, or even host a private event. They lead onto a gorgeous rooftop which has been transformed into the largest beer garden on the island. The garden will host bands, DJs, and other performers every week.

What is craft beer?

Craft beer is a term that gets bandied about on beer labels and menus a lot these days. But what actually makes a beer craft? And what does craft even mean?

Often applied incorrectly, the term craft beer most commonly refers to a beer that has been brewed by a small-scale, independent brewery. Craft brewers produce only a small output each year and attention to detail is key. Ultimately, it’s beer made by a brewery in which craftsmanship is sacred – they churn out varying styles of beer from mouth-tingling sour beers to wheaty white beers and dark and creamy stouts.

At The Chapels you can try innovative craft beers that are brewed right on-site and a fully stocked bar, signature cocktails, and a to-die-for food menu bashing out some amazing gastro-pub grub are also available!
