Do You Really Know What’s In An Energy Drink?

Energy drinks took Malta by storm about twenty years ago, and over time the choice and variety of brands has grown.

On the surface it might seem like there isn’t much difference between one or another but in reality, not all energy drinks are created equal.

Moderation is key when it comes to all aspects of a healthy diet, and the same can be said of energy drinks. A healthy adult can consume a moderate amount of energy drinks without any risk.

This was the conclusion of a study conducted by The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on food safety aspects of caffeine consumption. The sole purpose of this authority is to make the citizens of the EU the most protected and well informed in the world.

So what really goes into an energy drink?

HELL Energy is on a mission to produce high quality energy products at an affordable price. That is why the company is in a top position in several European countries and HELL is increasingly preferred by consumers.

HELL Energy drinks are made up of almost 90% water and cca. 10% made up of real granulated sugar.

It is common for other manufacturers to replace this sugar with sweeteners or isoglucose as a cheaper option. Caffeine, of course, is another main ingredient. Energy drinks are the only high-caffeine-containing foodstuffs that have the exact amount of caffeine in them as is marked on the can.

In most products caffeine content is 32 mg / 100 ml. It means that a 250 ml can of energy drink contains 80 mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to the amount found in a cup of medium-strong coffee.

The EFSA study also shows that a healthy adult can safely consume 400 mg of caffeine per day, which is equivalent to five cans of an energy drink.

However, as a responsible producer, HELL recommends one energy drink per day, excluding children and pregnant and breastfeeding women.

A can of HELL also contains carbonic acid (bubbles), citric acid (which regulates sourness), five kinds of vitamin B and an absorption helper protein, taurine, which is essential for the healthy development of the human body. The final ingredients are tutti-frutti aroma and caramel colouring.

HELL products are preserved by pasteurisation which means they are free from preservatives.

HELL is produced in a world class factory in Hungary. Supplied by German manufacturing machines and equipped with the latest technology, the factory is able to perform to European standards, filling seven million cans per day. Since opening the factory in 2011, HELL ENERGY has produced several billion products that pass through hundreds of checks before reaching the consumer.

HELL cans form part of the Beverage Container Refund Scheme (BCRS) and can be returned at one of the many Reverse Vending Machines across the island.
