The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) is stepping up its mission to shed a spotlight on environmental excellence through the addition of four new categories in the 2025 edition of the ERA Awards – Malta’s flagship celebration of environmental sustainability.

During the last edition, ERA awarded the Buonamico Award to Professor Alan Deidun, a distinguished academic whose groundbreaking scientific research and advocacy have bridged the gap between environmental science and meaningful conservation, was awarded the Bonamico Award. Equally inspiring is Steve Zammit Lupi, the recipient of last year’s Special Recognition Award, whose incredible journey—from cycling across Europe to raise awareness for sustainable transport to championing local eco-friendly initiatives in Ħaż-Żebbuġ exemplifies the activism that truly drives change.

Held under the patronage of the President of Malta, H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono, the awards have now been expanded to include four new award categories:

  • Corporate Award for Environmental Innovation and Sustainability for the Private Sector – Recognising businesses whose innovative green practices advance Malta’s environmental goals, including air quality, waste management and biodiversity.
  • Environmental Stewardship Award for Voluntary Organisations – Honouring non-Governmental community-led projects that inspire and engage people in sustainability efforts.
  • Green Public Leadership Award for Public Entities – Celebrating public institutions that are leading by example, through green transport, waste reduction and other sustainable initiatives.
  • Green School Scheme for Educational Institutions and Learning Programmes  – Funding projects in schools and educational institutions that immerse students in hands-on, nature-based learning, and build a strong culture of sustainability in practice from a young age.

“These Awards shine a spotlight on the exceptional contributions of those who are determinedly working to protect and preserve our natural resources. Through their dedication, innovation and relentless pursuit of a greener future, together we continue to make progress in our mission to safeguard Malta’s environment,” remarked ERA Chairman, Perit Vincent Cassar, during the launch.

ERA recognises that inclusivity and citizen participation are fundamental for effective environmental management. Engagement from both the public and private sectors is essential, and the ERA Awards are a reflection of ERA’s shared commitment to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

With the new expanded scope, the ERA Awards are set to become an unmissable annual fixture – celebrating Malta’s green champions and putting environmental responsibility in the national spotlight.
