Every Transaction Counts: WAMO Turns December Payments Into Donations For L-Istrina

For four weeks, wamo is donating €0.01 for every transaction made through a wamo POS or with a wamo Visa debit card in Malta. On 26 December, the company will double the final amount and present it live during the L-Istrina telethon.

Every Boxing Day for decades, Malta comes together for L-Istrina — the national fundraiser supporting the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. The telethon raises money for people facing major medical challenges and families experiencing financial hardship.

This year, wamo is joining the effort with an initiative that lets businesses give back simply by operating as usual. Every transaction processed through a wamo POS or made using a wamo Visa debit card automatically supports the cause.

How it works

  • 28 November to 26 December: wamo donates €0.01 for every transaction made through a wamo POS or wamo Visa debit card in Malta. There are no extra steps and no added costs — businesses run normally, and customers pay as they always do.

  • 26 December: wamo will reveal the final amount live on the L-Istrina telethon and double it.

Why this matters

The Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation provides vital medical and social support. This includes specialised medications for chronic illnesses and cancer, treatment for rare diseases, travel expenses for patients receiving care abroad, wigs for individuals undergoing medical treatment, specialised equipment and therapy programmes for people with disabilities, as well as essential household items, food vouchers, and support during difficult periods.

For many families, these services are not optional — they are essential.

“We wanted to make it easy for Malta’s businesses to give back during L-Istrina. Every transaction makes a difference,” says David Falzon, wamo’s Group Head of Payment Solutions. “This effort reflects what we believe at wamo: when technology empowers small businesses, their collective impact becomes anything but small. We’re excited to see what the Malta business community will have achieved on the 26th.”

For existing wamo merchants in Malta

If you already have a wamo POS or use wamo Visa debit cards, you’re automatically part of the initiative. Every transaction until 26 December contributes.

Don’t have a wamo POS or cards yet?

You can still join. A wamo POS can be set up in under 24 hours, with 0% transaction fees. Businesses can also order wamo Visa debit cards. Sign up during the campaign period and your first transaction immediately starts contributing.
