And this November, Maltese audiences will get the rare chance to experience them live as the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra lands in Valletta with its brand-new show Swing Forward.

It’s alive and well in Malta too, thanks to groups like Swing Island Malta, who’ve been building a buzzing community of dancers, musicians and jazz lovers right here at home. 1. What exactly is swing music and dance?
Swing music is lively jazz with a groove that makes you want to move. Born on the streets, in jazz clubs and ballrooms, it grew from the creativity of Black musicians and communities in America. As jazz evolved, from New Orleans and Dixieland to gypsy jazz, big band swing, smooth jazz and later mixing with R&B and rock ’n’ roll, the swing dance followed right along. Social, expressive and improvisational, swing is all about joy, not perfection.
2. How did Swing Island Malta begin?
It started as a small group of enthusiasts who wanted to share their love of swing dancing. We began with socials and workshops and little by little, the community grew. Today, our mission is to spread the joy of swing across Malta, by teaching, organising events and creating a welcoming space where anyone can experience this culture.

Glenn Miller’s music is one of the cornerstones of swing history. Having such an iconic orchestra perform here is a chance for our community to shine and to relive a glimpse of the golden age of swing, with all its elegance and beauty.

It’s classic and timeless. As a swing dancer, you can’t help but respect the original artists and performers like true icons. My personal favourite is String of Pearls, it captures the elegance and dreamlike charm of the orchestra.
5. How do you think young people will react to this concert?
Young people in Malta will be captivated. A live big band is a powerful and unique experience. It feels like a journey back in time in the best way possible.
6. How will Swing Island Malta be involved in this concert?
We’ll definitely be there dancing! We’re planning socials around the concert to build excitement and we’ll be encouraging everyone to come and join.
