It’s no secret that Malta’s history is rich with great battles and tales of woe. With temples older than Stonehenge, if the walls could speak, they’d have endless tales to tell us. Various heritage sites in Valletta will be open for free for the public to celebrate the dramatic history we have.

Grab your family and all of your friends and head down to Valletta on the 5th June as four unique sites across the capital city will be open for the public to visit, at no cost.

Learning about history through a book may be tedious, but learning about historical events while living and breathing in the same location where the event occurred is something extraordinary.

Explore the grounds of the Grand Master’s Palace right opposite St George’s Square. Currently undergoing restoration works, no one will be admitted to roam around the grounds unless forming part of a tour.

Tours will be happening between 10am and 4pm and this is where you’ll get the chance to take a sneak peek into the Aviary and Armoury halls. Tours will be of a maximum of 40 people per group and working on a first-come-first-served basis, so make sure you get there bright and early to visit this heritage site in Valletta.

Fort Saint Elmo will also be open to the public where visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the view from the fort while also being transported to various eras through re-enactments.

The Show of Arms re-enactment will focus on the Medieval period while the Legio X Frentensis Malta will take a closer look at civil and military life during Roman times.

Four guided tours will be conducted at the National Museum of Archaeology. The ones starting at 10.00am and 1.00pm will be in Maltese, while those at 11.00am and 2.00pm will be in English.

MUŻA will also be open for the public, with tours happening at 10am and 2pm. These tours will have a fun twist waiting for you as worksheets will be handed out to help you better understand the collections on display.

All of these heritage sites in Valletta are open to the public to enjoy as part of Heritage Malta’s new way forward. Placing more emphasis on how history is a part of us, Heritage Malta wants every single visitor, both local and foreign, to appreciate the culturally rich Maltese islands.

Taking you on a journey through the ages, Heritage Malta has picked some of Malta’s most iconic artefacts. These pieces of history will be displayed across the various heritage sites in Valletta and even in the squares of the capital.

History is being created constantly. Heritage Malta knows that the things we do today will eventually pave the way for the future. History is Part of Us, and that’s what Heritage Malta’s rebrand is all about.

Travel, movement and change are inevitable, but you can never forget where you came from.
