Jazz in the Vault: A Tribute to Gershwin and the Legends of the Great American Songbook
Step into a world of timeless melodies and jazz elegance, all tucked away in one of Malta’s most atmospheric settings. Just a short walk from Valletta and Floriana, the Sagrestia Vault at Valletta Waterfront is about to transform into a haven for music lovers.
Starting this June and running monthly until November, this intimate concert series pays tribute to the rich legacy of the Great American Songbook from Gershwin to Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and beyond. But this isn’t your typical jazz night. Set beneath the vaulted limestone ceilings of a centuries-old chamber, every note gains a warm, textured resonance that elevates the entire experience.
At the heart of the series is the long-awaited return of the Dominic Galea Trio, Dominic Galea (piano), Noel Grech (drums) and Mario Aquilina (bass) reuniting for the first time since 2018. They’ll be joined by acclaimed vocalists Nadine Axisa and Mariele Zammit, infusing each performance with soul and sophistication.
The series opens with a tribute to George Gershwin, featuring selections from Porgy and Bess, Lady, Be Good, and other beloved standards. Expect classic swing with a touch of modern flair, brought to life in a space where music and heritage blend seamlessly.
As the months unfold, the programme continues with evenings dedicated to legends like Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter, with a special jazz interpretation of The Beatles for a contemporary twist.
The venue itself is part of the magic. Nestled behind the Chapel of the Flight of the Holy Family to Egypt, the Sagrestia Vault is serene, softly lit and rich with character, offering a concert experience that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly unique.
