Malta’s Most Iconic Eurovision Moments

Article Featured Image

Malta might be a tiny island nation, but it has a big heart and an even bigger presence on the Eurovision stage. Over the years, our country has provided us with some memorable and quirky performances that have captured the hearts of fans around the world. Here are Malta’s most iconic Eurovision moments:

1. Our early attempts

Let’s start at the beginning – Malta’s first two attempts at Eurovision were… less than successful. In 1971 and 1972, the Maltese entries came last twice in a row. The songs just didn’t quite get it, but we didn’t let that stop us.

2. Ira Losco’s 7th wonder

In 2002, Ira Losco represented Malta with her hit song “7th Wonder.” The performance was memorable for its glitter blow, which has become an iconic moment in Eurovision history.

3. I’ll be your angel…

Chiara represented Malta three times in the contest and is considered one of the country’s most successful artists in Eurovision history. Her performance of “Angel” was so epic in 2005, it is still talked about today.

4. Another summer’s night

In 2001, the Maltese entry “Another Summer Night” by Fabrizio Faniello captured the essence of a summer night, complete with beach scenes and acoustic guitars. It may not have won, but it definitely captured the hearts of fans.

5. Desire

In 2000, singer-turned politician Claudette Pace brought the party to Eurovision with her earworm song “Desire.” The song was super upbeat and catchy, the performance was nothing less than lively, and it made Malta proud.

6. Christabelle – Taboo

In 2018, Christabelle’s “Taboo” tackled the difficult subject of mental health, and her powerful performance left a lasting impact on viewers.

7. Debbie Scerri’s… dress

Debbie Scerri’s 1997 dress may not have been the most stylish, but it made her win the Barbara Dex Award for the worst-dressed artist in the contest. A memorable moment, to say the least.

8. On again off again

In 2004, Julie and Ludwig brought a touch of romance to Eurovision with their duet “On Again… Off Again.” The chemistry between the two performers was palpable, and the song has become a fan favourite.

9. Mary Spiteri

In 1992, Mary Spiteri made Eurovision history by holding a single note for an epic 13 seconds during her performance of “Little Child.” A moment that left everyone in awe.

10. Gianluca

Gianluca’s performance of “Tomorrow” in 2013 was a breath of fresh air. With a catchy tune and a charming performance, he won the hearts of fans all over Europe.

11. Ira’s Bump Rub

In 2016, Ira Losco returned to the Eurovision stage with her song “Walk on Water.” But it was her famous bump rub during the performance that had everyone talking.

12. Winning the junior, twice!

Malta has also had success in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, winning twice in 2013 with Gaia Gauci and in 2015 with Destiny Chukunyere.
